In technical terms, a cage rail guide (or cage guide) is a linear guide without rolling element return, in accordance with DIN 644. Since this DIN standard only defines the external dimensions of the guide, manufacturers can equip these cage rail guides with various rolling elements such as balls, cylindrical rollers, or needle rollers. Some manufacturers also offer rail guides with a special sliding coating (sliding guides) in the same dimensions.
