Linear Ball Bearings
Linear ball bearings are also known as linear bearings, ball bushings, or linear bushings. In traditional rotating roller bearings, the balls run radially around the shaft. In linear ball bearings, they run axially along the shaft, allowing the bearing to move along the shaft with very low friction. To accommodate various applications, a wide range of linear ball bearings has been developed for shaft guides.
The most common linear ball bearings are those with a solid steel outer ring (LM, LME, etc.). These bearings have relatively low load ratings due to the simple design of the ball bushings.
In Europe in particular, linear ball bearings with raceway segments (ISO 10285, Series 3) have become established over the last 30 years. These bearings offer significantly higher load ratings and feature ground raceways (SBE, LBC, etc.).
Series 1 of ISO 10285 was developed for very compact and cost-effective applications. Due to the simple design of the linear ball bearings and the limited number of variants, these parts are produced in large quantities at very reasonable prices. The raceways are generally not ground (CLB…, KH…, LBBR…, LBBS…, etc.).
Standards for linear ball bearings
DIN ISO 10285 – Linear Ball Bearings, Metric Series
This standard defines the main dimensions, tolerances, and terminology for linear ball bearings. It classifies linear bushings into dimensional series and tolerance classes.
DIN ISO 13012 – Linear Ball Bearing Accessories
This standard specifies the main and other relevant dimensions of accessories for linear ball bearings in the metric series. Accessories include bearing housings, shafts, and shaft supports. It is intended for use in conjunction with DIN ISO 10285.
DIN ISO 14728 – Calculation of the Service Life of Linear Ball Bearings
This standard specifies procedures for calculating the dynamic load rating and basic rating life of linear rolling bearings. These bearings are manufactured from high-quality, hardened bearing steel according to established manufacturing processes and generally follow standard designs with respect to the shape of the rolling element contact surfaces.
The standard defines how to determine the service life of linear rolling bearings and specifies the conditions necessary for reliable service life calculations.
Linear Ball Bearings – Linear Bushings
Linear ball bearings, used together with hardened shafts, form a low-friction linear guide.
